Tutorial: Part 6

Writing a Rebuttal Paragraph...

                                    in 4 minutes

A rebuttal is required for an argumentative paper. This is the difference between persuasion and argument.

When Presenting the other side of the argument, you only present ONE point from their perspective. ONE!

There are a couple of ways to structure your rebuttal. You can start a rebuttal with a phrase like the following:

  • Some people think...
  • Other people think...
  • Many people believe...

After you present the other side of the argument you can do one of two things. You can

  1. shoot them down and explain why they are wrong.
  2. admit they have a point.
You then follow the counter point with: However, (share your ideas and express your position)

Take out your English spiral or your writing journal and a pencil. This is a VERY IMPORTANT PARAGRAPH that requires your absolute understanding, so you can apply it to your own writing.

REMEMBER: Your last statement summarizes your position.

Watch this video. Then watch it again, and again. Make notes of the information the instructor presented. You will be required to apply this information in your argumentative papers.
